the site of a castle which was razed to the ground in 1627 &#8211; that is to say, just before tea time.<\/p>\n<p>I find this a somewhat unlikely tale, as there was no sign of the castle at all, which is exactly what Wikipedia says.\u00a0 But to my mind, this is not proper history.\u00a0 I mean I could say that my house is built on the site of a grand palace, which <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5402 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov2-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, lingo, last Thursday and in its place was built my house.\u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s a fine story now I come to think of it, and I could perhaps make a few pennies by charging to look at my house.<\/p>\n<p>Which, now I think of it, is a pretty whizzo idea.\u00a0 Of course, what I don&#8217;t have is the tents, but I am sure I could get some of those, and the fact is that when it rains, there is <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5403 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov3-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov3-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov3-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov3-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> plenty of spare water rushing down the road.<\/p>\n<p>So I am not at all sure of all these tales that odd villages proclaim for themselves, no matter what people put up on Wikipedia.<\/p>\n<p>But this is not to say this was not a fine walk, although the clouds make it look a bit gloomy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5404 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov4-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov4-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov4-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov4-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov4-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov4-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> And indeed as we sallied forth (a phrase that Dictionary.com proclaims as meaning &#8220;to\u00a0leave\u00a0a\u00a0safe\u00a0place in a brave and confident manner in order to do something difficult.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now I think that is exactly what we do, us Ramblers, for I don&#8217;t know about you but I have to say for myself that I do feel my car is the &#8220;safe place&#8221; but once amidst the grass which, as you can see in one pic is<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5405 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov5-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov5-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov5-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov5-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov5-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov5-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/> nearly the height of a fairly tall thing which is growing a bit, so yes, sallying forth is exactly what we ramblers of the\u00a0 Peterborough variety most certainly do, and the pictures prove it.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, even the dark clouds take fright when we are on the move, backing away with gusto to allow us to march fifth (it has to be fifth as we have already sallied forth with vigour and whatnot.)<\/p>\n<p>I should add that the carrying of backpacks is not essential but is considered to be de rigueur.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t do it, having been brought up in Tottenham, where we don&#8217;t have footpaths, or grass, or trees, but everyone else does it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5406 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov6-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov6-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov6-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov6-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>But now here&#8217;s the fun bit.\u00a0 \u00a0Although the castle-type thing from some 400 years previous has gone, instead someone built a house.\u00a0 And a jolly nice house it was too.\u00a0 \u00a0But that made me wonder where all the other houses were.\u00a0 I mean why build just one house where you could build a village or a town?\u00a0 \u00a0I asked my fellow ramblers that, and they just gave me odd looks, which I think means they didn&#8217;t know.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5407 alignleft\" is going on.\u00a0 \u00a0They have mechanical whatnots in this part of the countryside, and they have gone rogue.\u00a0 Yes I kid you not.<\/p>\n<p>These beasties have no drivers within, but of their own volition, they are digging up the grasslands and turning it into dirt.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5408 alignright\" this?\u00a0 \u00a0Do Ramblers head office?\u00a0 Well, I have to say I jolly well took it upon myself and told them that all this greenery and river type things is going to be done pretty damn soon if we don&#8217;t do something about it, and they sent a jolly nice chap around to see me on this very subject.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And indeed he was not only jolly nice in fact he also\u00a0 invited me back to his place, pictured here among the trees, \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5410 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6Nov9-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" behind the grounp, and I know how much everyone wants to see my pictures and hear about each walk we go on.<\/p>\n<p>So no, I returned to the gathering and found us walking \u00c0 toute vitesse back to the voitures, across various watery bits and more grassylands.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5411 alignright\" de temps en temps and similar bits of French had started to infiltrate themselves into my report.\u00a0 \u00a0And that is the reason for the delay in my providing these jolly remembrances of this walk
