have in store for us, but perhaps the lesson of the Braunstone walk is never to take anything for granted, no matter what the signs fortell.<\/p>\n<p>For here we were in Braunstone, or to give it its most fulsome and complete name Braunston-in-Rutland.\u00a0 Which perchance gives a clue as to which county we find the village within.<\/p>\n<p>And this is important because it turns out that there is also a Braunstone in neighbouring Northamptonshire and it<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3902 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone5-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"426\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone5-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone5-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone5-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone5-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, essential to go to the right one otherwise one will be in the wrong place, and that will never do.\u00a0 Not at all.<\/p>\n<p>So there was much map looking and checking at the start point as we waited for confirmation that this was indeed the starting place for our meanderings.<\/p>\n<p>And indeed it was, and it was worth checking the graveyard and also the church which was open and welcoming for anyone wishing to enter within.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3903 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone6-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone6-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone6-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone6-768x576.jpeg the days of yore and much had been done to keep the place in a state suitable for its purpose.<\/p>\n<p>But also there were the initial signs of times past which were not fully in keeping with the current teaching of the Church.\u00a0 \u00a0Although such matters are not those upon which I feel competent to comment.<\/p>\n<p>What we did find however was that there was nothing in the church or its attendant yard that gave us much <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3904 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone7-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone7-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone7-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone7-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone7-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone7-2048x1536.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/>forewarning of what was to come hereafter (although not in the hereafter, if you get my drift).<\/p>\n<p>So for now we ventured forth in jolly mood, taking in the ancient houses of days of yore and indeed as you will see ancient carvings whose meanings can these days only be surmised.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not a member of the faith myself, but I am glad to see that earlier commemorations are still allowed to retain their place in the churchyard.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3906 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone8-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone8-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone8-2048x1536.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/>I have no idea how old the final stone carving in this collection is, but I think we can classify it as on the Very Very side of being Very Old.\u00a0 \u00a0It has stood here for a long time I&#8217;m sure &#8211; the church itself was built in the 12th century, so 800 or 900 years is a possibility.<\/p>\n<p>But I wondered thereafter spending time photographing such monuments of the past was not perhaps displeasing to the powers above, for as it turned out, later on our walk the weather did threaten to move against us as the clouds darkened<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3898 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone1-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"428\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone1-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone1-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone1-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone1-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braunstone1-1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" \/>.
