{"id":3503,"date":"2023-05-20T15:15:32","date_gmt":"2023-05-20T14:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/?p=3503"},"modified":"2023-05-20T15:27:02","modified_gmt":"2023-05-20T14:27:02","slug":"the-walk-from-coates-in-cambridgeshire-may-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/?p=3503","title":{"rendered":"The walk from Coates in Cambridgeshire: May 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Photographs of elegance by Jonathan Bridgland, rambling and disjointed words of little relevance, by Tony Attwood<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3498 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coates12-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"483\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coates12-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coates12-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coates12-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coates12-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coates12-2048x1365.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" \/>Coates is a village in Cambridgeshire of which it has been said that therein lies a shop and a Post Office, all together in one place, but of which we will hear no more.<\/p>\n<p>For this is a tale of wild adventure along the lands that lie beyond, and those that lie beyond those that lie beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Thus it was here that our faithful band ventured forth with all signs of habitation left behind and <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3502 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates1-1-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates1-1-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates1-1-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates1-1-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates1-1-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates1-1-2048x1365.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/>that is indeed just as well for information on Coates itself is minimal.\u00a0 \u00a0Save that Coates has two greens, a north green and a south green.<\/p>\n<p>But of these again we need hear no more for once everyone had gathered and determined which green was which, there was a walk to be had along the river, and the settlements of Eastrea, Bassenhally Farm and Eldernell.\u00a0 \u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3500 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coates10-2-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coates10-2-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coates10-2-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coates10-2-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coates10-2-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coates10-2-2048x1365.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/>And if you have not ventured to this part of the kingdom, then if I quote from Wiki on the subject of Eastrea to the effect that, &#8220;There was once a church in the village,&#8221; you will perhaps appreciate in true fulsomeness, this land beyond the land beyond.\u00a0 It is now the kingdom of the swans and sheep.<\/p>\n<p>But let me also quote from Wiki on Eastrea, to the effect that &#8220;Eastrea <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3494 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates2-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates2-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates2-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates2-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates2-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates2-2048x1365.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/>was formerly the home of two public houses, The Windmill and The Nags Head. The Windmill was demolished in the mid-20th century and it was hoped that the site would be used for a new village hall; such plans never came to fruition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And beyond the pub&#8230; well,\u00a0 this is a land of footpaths, tributaries, swans and sheep.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3493 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates3-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates3-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates3-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates3-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates3-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates3-2048x1365.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3491 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates5-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates5-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates5-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates5-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates5-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Coates5-2048x1365.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yet it remains the fact that one or two have ventured forth the opinion that I make up some of the &#8220;so-called facts&#8221; that illuminate my illustrious commentaries which sit alongside the wonderful photographs with which I am supplied after each perambulation.\u00a0 \u00a0But let me illuminate my simple words with a tale from days of yore.\u00a0 For it seems that in 2010 the owners of The Nag&#8217;s Head sought planning approval to convert the pub into houses, citing a significant downturn in business as the main reason for doing so. However, Fenland District Council (of whom it has been said) refused permission, stating that &#8216;financial loss is no reason to allow the conversion of a pub&#8217;, which I guess sums it all up.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>What the swans and sheep made of it all is not recorded in the annals of the region but I <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3505 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coatesimperious-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"511\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coatesimperious-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coatesimperious-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coatesimperious-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coatesimperious-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/coatesimperious-2048x1365.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\" \/>can but guess.<\/p>\n<p>But I have one other snippet from Eastrea that may help you grasp the pure essence of the locality.\u00a0 Permission was granted in the 1960s for a hall on the former site of The Windmill pub, but no work was completed before the permission expired.
