{"id":2650,"date":"2022-11-04T17:36:36","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T16:36:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/?p=2650"},"modified":"2022-11-04T17:42:54","modified_gmt":"2022-11-04T16:42:54","slug":"the-stockerston-walk-3-november-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/?p=2650","title":{"rendered":"The Stockerston Walk: 3 November 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pictures by Mandy Ellwood, Rambling notes by Tony Attwood<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2657 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stokerston-7-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stokerston-7-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stokerston-7-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stokerston-7.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Stockerston is a village in Leicestershire, located on the border with <a title=\"Rutland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rutland\">Rutland<\/a>, by the Eye Brook which is a tributary of the River Welland.<\/p>\n<p>According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 35.\u00a0 \u00a0So a little bit smaller than Peterborough.<\/p>\n<p>But it does have a church and this fine picture of the Church of St Peter shown below was taken by Tim Heaton.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2656 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"310\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"mw-mmv-image-desc-div\">\n<p class=\"mw-mmv-image-desc\">The Parish contains various woods including the large Bolt Wood, and it is suggested by those who study such things that the woodland is part of that mentioned in the Domesday Book.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-mmv-image-desc\">Certainly Bolt Wood was around by the medieval era as part of the royal Leighfield Forest known around the reign of Henry VI as Leighfield Forest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-mmv-image-desc\">Also nearby is the wonderfully named Little Merrible Wood.<\/p>\n<p>The church as you can imagine is a Grade I listed building, meaning that extensions for the purpose of parties, discotheques and associated 21st century paraphernalia are not allowed without the personal permission of the King.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2651 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-1-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-1-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-1-771x1024.jpg 771w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-1-768x1020.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-1-1157x1536.jpg 1157w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-1-1542x2048.jpg 1542w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-1-scaled.jpg 1928w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>The church as it is seen today was built between the 13th and 15th century and there is a memorial inside to John Boyville, largely built in the 13th to 15th centuries. The windows contain some medieval stained glass and the memorials inside the church include a brass that commemorates John Boyville (born 1391 and died around 1467 &#8211; meaning he was one of the very few people of the era who managed to see in his 75th birthday, and then some).<\/p>\n<p>He was a major landowner who served as a Member of Parliament for Leicestershire and for Rutland.\u00a0 \u00a0The inscription on his memorial is of course in Latin, but roughly translated reads,\u00a0 &#8220;pray for the souls of John Boivile, a bearer of arms, and Elizabeth his wife who had this bell tower and bells made&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>But of course, for the Ramblers the interest is in the countryside although dark and looming clouds reigned over the land intially on the day of the walk.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2652 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-2-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"354\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-2-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-2-771x1024.jpg 771w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-2-768x1020.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-2-1157x1536.jpg 1157w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-2-1542x2048.jpg 1542w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-2-scaled.jpg 1928w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 354px) 100vw, 354px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Scatterings of Roman and Anglo-Saxon pottery have been discovered at Stockerston, as befits a village mentioned in the Domesday Book.\u00a0 In later times it is recorded that two medieval hospitals existed in the village although the notion that either was there to look after pedestrians (or Ramblers as we would know them today) after a quick trip around the locality, has not been confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Stockerston is recorded as having two medieval hospitals, the first being established in 1307.\u00a0 I would imagine leeches would have been high on the agenda.<\/p>\n<p>The most famous resident, as far as I know, was Anthony Tuckney (I am not sure if his mates called him Tony but it would be nice to think that they did).\u00a0 \u00a0In 1666 he moved out of London (which if you know your history you will recall was quite warm at the time) and moved to the village in order to avoid being fried.<\/p>\n<p>The structure above right is a triangulation point, used in surveying.\u00a0 I am told (unreliably as always) that these points are used to study geodynamical phenomena, including crustal motion, tides and polar motion.\u00a0 I am sure this was discussed in depth on the walk and I am most sorry that I missed the debate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2653 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-3-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-3-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-3-771x1024.jpg 771w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-3-768x1020.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-3-1157x1536.jpg 1157w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-3-1542x2048.jpg 1542w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Stockerston-3-scaled.jpg 1928w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The village, being as ancient as it is, has no less than ten listed buildings within it &#8211;
