The weather was reasonable, but we headed into a strong breeze.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1481 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"429\" height=\"321\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1482 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"429\" height=\"321\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The first feature of interest was the earthworks that are the only visible remains of the medieval village of Martinsthorpe, a community that declined in the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century as land use converted from arable to sheep pasture.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The only surviving building on the site is the stable block of Martinsthorpe Hall, built in the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century and apparently a splendid, moated manor house in its heyday. The stable block became Hall Farm, but is now a privately owned row of cottages.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1483 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A tarmac track gave us relief from the earlier mud as we tramped ever westward under brightening skies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1484 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1488 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton10-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"423\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton10-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton10-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton10-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton10.jpg 1051w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/>We descended into the hamlet of Brooke with its attractive church. The earliest parts date back to Norman times, and periods of restoration in the Elizabethan and Victorian periods have given it some interesting features. A recent claim to fame is that it appeared in the 2005 film version of Pride and Prejudice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We encountered different aspects of 21<sup>st<\/sup> century life\u2026 friendly pigs hoping for some attention\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2026equally friendly hounds out for a spot of exercise with their handlers appropriately dressed\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 and a not so friendly, huge tractor spraying a field from gigantic arms\u2026 Fortunately we escaped its attention and, consequently, its offering of nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>After a descent to the railway crossing with lights that held us while a freight train passed, and the ascent back into Manton, some group (herd) members felt they had earned their pints in the local hostelry&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1491 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton13-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"417\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton13-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton13-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton13-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterboroughramblers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manton13.jpg 1116w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pictures taken by Simon.\u00a0 Text by Hilary &nbsp; &nbsp; Like the drovers of yesteryear, our \u2018herd\u2019 of Ramblers set off along the Bronze Age ridgeway that forms part of the Macmillan Way long-distance footpath.
